Description

After leaving the pilgrim accommodation of Hornillos del Camino, we cross a street shortly afterwards, but then we are alone again with the endless meseta to Rabé de Las Calzadas. However, this impressive experience with the plateau comes to an end in Rabé de Las Calzadas. Now we are back in more densely populated areas with more infrastructure. Burgos was founded around 850 as an important fortification in the fight against the Moors advancing from the south and became the coronation city of the kings of Castile in the 11th century. The Gothic cathedral of Burgos is known for its size and architecture and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1984. In Burgos it is worth staying in the modern and very inexpensive pilgrims' hostel, which opened in 2007/08, right next to the cathedral. Even here, accommodation is in dormitories, but these are a shining example of how a city can receive and accommodate pilgrims comfortably and inexpensively.
