We have a somewhat unusual suggestion for today's stage. Before we continue the path north along the Saalach, we visit the pilgrimage church of Maria Kirchental, which is beautifully located in a secluded high valley above Sankt Martin near Lofer. The church, which is affectionately known as Pinzgau Cathedral, was built between 1693 and 1701 according to plans by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. The image of the Virgin Mary on the high altar had already been venerated centuries before. The fascination and isolation of this place in an impressive landscape makes it a worthwhile detour from the Jerusalemweg. The Tiroler-Steig through the forest is ideal for the climb from Lofer over Bad Hochmoos. The 3,9 km and 1,5 hours are rewarded by the wonderful pilgrimage site. There is a house of reflection and an inn attached to the pilgrimage church. We then hike the same way back to Lofer, where we may even have left our backpacks. For the rest of the stage we follow the Saalach on a picture-book pilgrimage to the stage town of Unken, the last town in Austria for the time being. Shortly before Unken we pass the impressive Innersbachklamm! The Saalach then flows further through Germany and flows into the Salzach near Salzburg, which then forms the border between Germany and Austria until it flows into the Inn near Haiming.

At the destination of Unken, Jerusalem pilgrims may have the option of accommodation in the guest room of the rectory. And right next door is the Kirchenwirt, the country hotel is recommended! www.kirchenwirt-unken.at
