Description
We leave Sankt Johann in Tirol, located in the Leukental, northwards along the Grossache and come via Kirchdorf in Tirol to Erpfendorf, where we branch off eastwards and leave the Leukental. Waidring is up the side valley and behind the culmination point. Its location on the old Poststrasse between the Leukertal and Salzburgerland promoted the development. The beautiful parish church, a building first documented at the end of the 14th century, was rebuilt in 1757. Behind Waidring we follow the Haselbach through a high valley until the Haselbach is suddenly called Loferbach. Then the valley bends steeply downwards, we reach the border with Salburgerland and the Strub pass, a pass that was the scene of battles against Bavaria and the French several times at the beginning of the 19th century. The stage location Lofer is then at the foot of the pass and thanks to its lovingly restored town houses it is an attractive holiday destination in both winter and summer. In the center is the oldest plague column in the country, which is dated to 1648. Particularly splendid houses line the market square, including the town hall, built in the 16th century with the crenellated round cores. Particularly worth seeing are the well-known “Saalachtal forces of nature” south of the village, i.e. away from the pilgrimage route: the Seisenbergklamm, the Lamprechtshöhle and the Vorderkaserklamm.
