Description

We leave the hostel from Hungarian pilgrimage route Magyar Zarándokút (MZ) and reach the center of Budapest today!

First of all, the Jerusalem Way leads us directly to Castle Hill in Budapest, a historically very significant place! The castle district Vár is worth seeing, with the Trinity Column, the Fishermen's Bastion and the famous Matthias Church, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site! A historical place, in this church the world-famous Empress of Austria, Elisabeth (Sissi) was crowned Queen of Hungary in 1867! And a reminder of the Jerusalem pilgrims coming from Spain: In the city of Geneva in Switzerland, Empress Sissi was murdered, the location at the lake at the time was also directly on our route.

Back to Budapest and the castle complex. Here there are many more sights to visit, as already mentioned the fisherman's bastion, the Vienna Gate etc. Finally the route leads us from the castle down to the Danube, immediately before the chain bridge we pass the "zero kilometer" stone. From this point all roads in Hungary were measured, the stone is directly on the route and cannot be overlooked. "Our 0 km stone was" - if we started in Spain - at the lighthouse of Finisterre, this is now more than 3000 km ago.

We then cross the Chain Bridge and reach the Budapest Cathedral / Saint Stephen's Basilica with the large forecourt in the old town. Very nice there, musicians, cafes etc. The holiday mood arises, you could almost forget that you have to go on ... But before that you should stay 1 - 2 days in the Hungarian capital, as mentioned above there are a lot of sights!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR THE FURTHER WAY FROM BUDAPEST

After reaching Budapest, the route runs south for many weeks, basically to Greece! So we dive step by step into the Hungarian lowlands and come a little closer to our distant destination Jerusalem.

Pilgrim pass and hostels: For the further route TOWARDS BORDER CROATIA / SERBIA we have a cooperation with the HUNGARIAN PILGRIMAGE Magyar Zarandokut (MZ). It was agreed that pilgrims with the Jerusalem Path Pilgrim Pass can sleep cheaply in their hostels. The prerequisite is that every pilgrim also has the Hungarian MZ pilgrim passport, this can be seen symbolically in the and a nice souvenir, every passport issued is important for your organization. There are hostels along the entire route down the Danube from Budapest to the city of Baja. From Baja it is only a day's stage to the Hungarian border town of Mohács, the triangle with Croatia and Serbia! And for pilgrims who do not come from Vienna but from Poland, the Czech Republic or Slovakia, there are also hostels from MZ from Esztergom (Gran) to Budapest!

Important: Further details on accommodation, hostels and pilgrim pass see in the Hungary menu
