Description

Today we mostly hike near the Rhone, on the east side of the river. In the last part of the stage, we switch from the department of Savoie to the department of Haute-Savoie. The terrain is still hilly for the first few kilometers, but from Chanaz it becomes absolutely flat - we follow the Rhone to Seyssel. The Rhone was a clear, rushing mountain stream in Valais, but that has changed since Lake Geneva. the Rhône is now wider, interrupted by power plants and barrages, and used by various industrial facilities. However, we also hike on the crests of the dams with beautiful views of the broad and quite calm river, and for a change sometimes a longer stretch through alluvial forests. At Chanaz we also meet the Canal de Savières, which not only forms a shipping connection with the rather large Lac du Bourget reservoir to the east, but can also supply this reservoir with large amounts of water - the Rhone has enough of it. The stage destination Seyssel is then again a bigger place where we can find almost everything that pilgrims need.
