Purkersdorf – Vienna – Schwechat

Vienna is a city with an extensive history and many sights! For “this stage,” you should plan at least 2 days as a “culture day” to visit a few sights such as Schönbrunn Palace, Heldenplatz, Hofburg, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, etc., and thus at least immerse yourself a bit in the flair of the Austrian capital. With nearly 1.9 million inhabitants, Vienna is, alongside Budapest, the largest city on the Danube and at the same time the second-largest city on the long way to Jerusalem (only Izmir in TR, ancient Smyrna, has more inhabitants). Optionally, you could of course take public transport to the cathedral, but we recommend setting out on foot to engage with the city. The Jerusalem Way route leads through car-free or traffic-calmed areas wherever possible and offers a lot in terms of culture and sights. A tip for staying overnight, for example: at the “DoStepInn” hostel, Tel. +43 1 9823314, there are affordable rooms in Vienna, and at Mariahilferbräu, located directly on the Jerusalem Way at Mariahilfer Str. 152, there is inexpensive and very good food, including large Wiener Schnitzels, of course.

Important: In St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom), you can get the JERUSALEM WAY stamp with the peace dove for our pilgrim pass! The stamp is located in the shop, which is in the cathedral on the left near the entrance area. Speaking of pilgrim stamps, attached is a photo with Jerusalem Way / JERUSALEM WAY pilgrim stamps from Austria: So we should have at least these stamps in our pass once we have crossed all of Austria.

After exploring the cathedral and the center of Vienna, the route leads across the Danube Canal and further to the landmark of Vienna, the Giant Ferris Wheel with the famous Prater including places to stop for refreshments. Subsequently, we fittingly cross the Danube Canal again at Friedensgasse, now along its right side until we reach the center of Schwechat at the end of this cultural stage.
