Marzoll – AUSTRIA – Salzburg – Eugendorf
After yesterday’s short excursion through Germany, we are back in familiar Austria from today. This stage leads us northwards near the border to the motorway. In Gois, we have a beautiful view from the hill where the church stands, complete with a pilgrim’s column. A little later, the Laschenskyhof invites us for a pleasant break, in the outdoor dining area if the weather is good. We have now been in the municipality of Wals-Siezenheim for a while; it encompasses numerous villages and, with over 13,000 inhabitants, is even considered the «largest village in Austria». We continue as before in the greater Salzburg motorway junction area, later encountering the southern end of the runway of «Salzburg Airport W.A. Mozart», which also means hearing the sounds of planes taking off and landing, similar to what we experienced in Innsbruck. All these transport routes are signs of a city that is popular with business people and, especially, tourists. We will soon meet them in Salzburg’s Old Town, where we will also encounter Salzburg Cathedral and Mozart’s birthplace. This stage does not end in Salzburg, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stay overnight here, as Salzburg has much, very much, to offer. The path continues northwards along the Salzach, first on the left bank, then on the right bank, where, after crossing a motorway on the Plainberg near Bergheim, we reach the pilgrimage church Maria Plain, another highlight of this stage. To continue our pilgrimage, we go back a short distance on the same path, and at the Wirtshaus zur Plainlinde, we then turn eastwards. This way, we reach the stage destination Eugendorf via Berg and Hallwang.
