Jerusalem Way of the Apostles: Fulda – Nördlingen

From the Cathedral in Fulda through Franconia

The Jerusalem Way of the Apostles begins at the Cathedral of St. Salvator in Fulda. There lies the tomb of Saint Boniface, who is known as the “Apostle of the Germans.” In the area of St. Michael’s Church near the cathedral square, a JERUSALEM WAY Peace Dove has stood since September 30, 2023, oriented toward Jerusalem.

From Fulda, the Jerusalem Way leads south through the Franconian cultural and pilgrimage landscape. Significant places along this route section are Würzburg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and finally Nördlingen.

Traces of the Apostles and Wandering Missionaries

The route commemorates the insular wandering missionaries who spread Christianity in Central Europe after the Migration Period. In Würzburg, the route leads to the traces of the missionaries and martyrs Kilian, Colman, and Totnan.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is also called the “Jerusalem of Franconia” due to its history, its medieval town layout, and its religious connections. This route section ends in the former Imperial City of Nördlingen.

Onward Route to Donauwörth and Passau

From Nördlingen, the Jerusalem Way continues on the next stage to Donauwörth. There, the Jerusalem Way of the Apostles merges with the Jerusalem Way of the Kings.

Both routes then run together via Regensburg to Passau. There, the Jerusalem Way of the Monasteries joins them. From Passau, all three German Jerusalem Ways continue together through Upper Austria to Linz and onward on the main route toward Jerusalem.

Navigation and GPS

The Jerusalem Way does not have its own trail markings everywhere. Please use the current GPS route for navigation and save the necessary maps for offline use when possible. For planning individual daily stages, accommodations, supply options, and current trail conditions should be checked in advance.
