Arbing – Clam Castle – Grein – DOVE OF PEACE (Nadlingerhof)

Stage 8: Arbing – Grein

From the founding site through the Machland

Today, the route takes us from the founding site of the Jerusalem Way through the founding region: from the impressive fortified church in Arbing via Baumgartenberg, the Klamschlucht gorge and Clam Castle to Grein on the Danube.

From Arbing parish church we walk down the short Kirchenberg hill, keep left for a few metres, and then immediately turn right onto a forest path. Soon a beautiful view over the Machland opens up.

The route continues through the villages of Frühstorf and Puchberg. At the end of the village we keep left and later, at a wayside shrine, turn sharply right onto a farm track. Across fields and through a small wooded area we finally reach the first houses of the municipality of Baumgartenberg.

Baumgartenberg and Klamschlucht Gorge

Then we continue for a while close to the Danube road B3 on a narrow asphalt road until we turn left towards Klam. After about 100 metres we keep right again and reach a farm track towards the village of Au.

There the Jerusalem Way turns left into the Klamschlucht and continues to the well-known Clam Castle. This section is one of the particularly beautiful passages of the stage.

High up we finally reach the old walls of Clam Castle. In summer, international concerts take place here, attracting many visitors from German-speaking countries. With a bit of luck, you can experience the castle’s special atmosphere or stop by the castle tavern.

Via Klam to Grein

After the castle we reach the village of Klam, pass the church and turn right at the end of the village. Over the gentle hills of the Machland, the Jerusalem Way continues towards Grein.

Our destination for the day is the main square of Grein on the Danube with its fountain. Grein is a historic Danube town and a lovely finish to this stage.

The Schörgi pastry shop is especially recommended. With a view of the Danube, you can recharge there and treat yourself to something sweet. There is also a JERUSALEM WAY pilgrim stamp with dove of peace there. Please ask for the stamp in the café.

Option: Continue on to Nadlingerhof

If you still have time and energy, you can take the ferry across the Danube today and continue up to the around 500-year-old Nadlingerhof. A special place above the Danube awaits pilgrims there.

The ferry runs seasonally. Please be sure to check the current operating times in advance: Open information about the Grein ferry

For an overnight stay or a pilgrim stamp at Nadlingerhof, please be sure to call ahead. A sleeping mat is required. Details and contact information are listed in the next stage.
