Description
Today's stage takes us from the Bernese Oberland over the Brünig Pass to the canton of Obwalden, a canton in central Switzerland. On the Brünig we also switch from the Aare catchment area to the Reuss catchment area, which begins at the Gotthard and then feeds Lake Lucerne. If this stage seems too demanding for you, you can interrupt it, you can already find overnight accommodation on the Brünig Pass, and then again in the larger towns along the pass road. We leave Brienz along the riverside path we came on. When we then leave the lake and get to the first inclines, it is worth stopping occasionally and looking back, because the panorama over Lake Brienz and the surrounding, mostly snow-covered Alps of the Bernese Oberland is breathtaking. The ascent from Brienzwiler is also breathtaking, because it is steep and sometimes slippery, especially in damp weather. When we arrive on the Brünig, we will certainly take a break, or maybe even interrupt the stage. The descent then takes place in two stages, first to the Lungerersee, and in a second stage then all the way down to the valley to the Sarnersee. This section offers a variety of vantage points from the old mule track on which we hike down into the valley, enriched by the two lakes. After following a section of the path along the banks of the Sarnersee, we reach Sachseln. There the remains of the Swiss national saint Niklaus von Flüe are kept in the celebration altar in the parish church, and an exhibition in the museum below the church is dedicated to the life of the saint. At the end there is another ascent, namely to Flüeli, where Brother Klaus was once born.
