Description
We have arrived in the Meseta, a mostly treeless (and therefore shadowless) Spanish plateau at around 800 meters above sea level, slightly hilly, with endless, straight paths mostly to the east. Mainly grain is grown here. The area is therefore mostly green in spring, then golden-brown with increasing grain maturity, and after the grain harvest we come across stubble fields that are later plowed over. We won't see any big places in Meseta anymore, but the small places on the way mostly have piger accommodation. In summer it can get very hot up here, so drinks are a must. El Burgo Ranero has a partially preserved medieval town fortification. We leave the town through the «Arco de Conceptión», part of this former fortification. Bercianos Del Real Camino indicates in its name that this place was once (in contrast to a southern route) the Camino Real (Royal Way), i.e. the first-class road. The stage town of Sahagún is known for the famous battle of Charlemagne against the Moors Agiolandos west of the Cea in 778. The two churches of San Lorenzo and San Tirso are known to connoisseurs for the “Mudéchar style” of the 13th century.
