Description
The first stage on the long way to Jerusalem begins on the Atlantic coast, in the very west of Europe! For many pilgrims who have made the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela on foot or by bike, our starting point is the ultimate end of their pilgrimage.
There are now almost 8000 km to Jerusalem in front of us, whether we want to cover the entire route in one piece or do the Jerusalem Way in stages. Our route leads towards sunrise - symbolically towards life.
Step by step we are on the way to the most important pilgrimage site in Christianity and the intersection of world religions: Jerusalem!
For a long stretch through Spain, the Jerusalem Way is identical to the Camino Francés. But we are traveling from west to east, that is a completely different feeling and connected with many encounters, as we will soon experience. The pilgrims come towards us.
We start at the lighthouse on Cabo Finisterra (or «Fisterra» in Galician) and are the first to meet the fishing village of Finisterra, where we will move at sea level. After a series of bays (with inviting sandy beaches) and hills, this will be the case again in the larger town of Cée, a town at the end of the bay protected by the cape, which, thanks to the headland, has a natural harbor that can easily be avoided the waves and storms of the Atlantic Ocean is protected. In Cée we can buy everything we need for the long journey. Shortly afterwards we leave the bay and start the hike inland, uphill to the first stage location Olveiroa.
