Description

Today we come from the semi-canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden to the semi-canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, even before we reach Jakobsbad. However, this short stretch will still make us sweat, because we climb the steep slopes of the «Lauftegg», enjoy the view, then descend again and cross the border between the two half-cantons. We then reach the bottom of the valley at Jakobsbad Monastery with a church that is well worth seeing. A few steps further we come to the Kurhaus Hotel Jakobsbad, where we can relax with food and drink from the Lauftegg. We would have done something good for body and mind. Along our route we come across some brooks that all flow north to Lake Constance. We started on the Urnäsch, and Jakobsbad is located on the Wissbach, which later flows into the Urnäsch. Between Gonten and Gontenbad we cross another watershed along a golf course and come to the catchment area of the Sitter. Passing a Capuchin monastery we reach Appenzell, the main town of Appenzell Innerrhoden. The parish church of St. Mauritius with its choir, tower and crypt is worth seeing. The town hall and the brightly painted wooden houses with the typical curved gables are also photogenic. When we leave Appenzell, the path leads us flat to Steinegg, followed by a final ascent of around 100 meters in altitude to the stage location Eggerstand.
