Description
Today we leave the foothills of the Swiss Alps and descend into the broad plains in which the Rhine carries precipitation and snowmelt from the northern side of the Alps in the canton of Graubünden into Lake Constance. We also leave Appenzell and come back to the canton of St. Gallen, which surrounds the two Appenzell all around. From Eggerstand we have a short and easy climb until we have reached the culmination point at the Bildstein chapel and then use a path on the east side practically in the fall line to descend around 600 meters in altitude. At the “Neuenalp” we step back onto St. Gallen soil, which, however, doesn't feel any different. Once in the Rhine plain, we accompany the Rhine a short distance on its way via Lake Constance to the North Sea, before we then leave Switzerland on a bridge and reach Austria, at Meiningen in the state of Vorarlberg, the second smallest state in Austria in terms of area and population. After crossing the Rhine plain, we reach the stage town of Rankweil via the Brederis district, where we are not greeted by an old fortress from Liebfrauenberg, but by a pilgrimage church. Rankweil is a historical gathering place for pilgrims, let's see how we are received.
