Description

Today a special stage awaits us on the Jerusalemweg, we leave Austria and reach another country on the long way to Jerusalem: The Federal Republic of Germany!

So today we are leaving Austria, because we are crossing a corner of Bavaria that extends deep into the Alpine Republic from the north, the so-called Small German corner. And as an absolute specialty on the 7.000 km route, we will even cross TWO border crossings on one pilgrimage day! We only have a similar situation again much later, namely in the border triangle of Hungary - Croatia - Serbia, here too we have two border crossings in one day. But there are still many kilometers ahead of us.

To the right in the south we see the Berchtesgaden Alps, across which the border with Austria runs. We can thank the Saalach that over time it has carved a path for us through the Alpine massif that can be walked even without mountaineering training or equipment. It goes without saying that this “Little German Corner” has an extensive history in terms of military strategy and customs, but that would go beyond the scope of this documentation. We cross the Alpine chain along the Saalach and then, in flatter terrain, come to a reservoir that is fed by the Saalach. We then come to Bad Reichenhall, whose prosperity is based on the salt trade (white gold). When King Max II spent his summer vacation in Bad Reichenhall in 1848, its reputation and fame as an elegant spa in the elegant world were established. The Old Saltworks or the magnificent Kurhaus are reminders of the city's eventful history. The numerous large and small churches include the St. Zeno Minster as the largest basilica in southern Bavaria, the St. Nicholas Church with frescoes by Moritz von Schwind and the Carmelite Church of St. Ägidi as the oldest church in the city. The stage town of Marzoll is located directly on the border with Austria, the state of Salzburg. A scenically and historically interesting stage comes to an end.
