Description

Stamp of the City of Peace Linz Stamp of the City of Peace Linz

After spending the night, today the route takes us from Wilhering Abbey to Linz, the state capital of Upper Austria. Another deliberately short stage awaits us in order to have more time for the highlights of Linz and there are a few short climbs to overcome.

After the monastery we cross the main road, we go uphill into the forest and shortly afterwards we turn left at the houses. The Jerusalem Way markings lead us into the forest. Not far from the Danube, continue hiking on the Prinzensteig. A well-marked, beautiful path through the Kürnbergwald finally takes us up to the "13 Tower", from where we have a first view of the tower on the left Pöstlingberg Church have, the landmark of Linz.

We then reach the lovely Magic Valley, pass the Freinberg and at the top we have a great view of the state capital of Upper Austria: the City of Peace and European Capital of Culture Linz. We come to Mariahilfgasse and Römerstraße Martin's Church, one of the oldest churches in Austria (from the 8th century)!

Shortly afterwards we reach Linz Castle, from where there is a beautiful view of the Danube and the Pöstlingberg! Through the old town we reach the main square with the Trinity Column (a plague column).

Info: In the town hall in the tourist information there is a very nice JERUSALEM WAY stamp with a dove of peace! See photo attached.

The path then takes us through the pedestrian zone to St. Mary's Cathedral, our destination. Mary the Queen of Peace on the way to Jerusalem, and this cathedral is actually the largest church in Austria (capacity for around 20.000 people)!

It is worth planning a rest day to visit the city with its many sights and to benefit from the wide range of offers for overnight stays. As already mentioned, Linz was European Capital of Culture in 2009 and has also been a City of Peace since 1986! Link to the sights (Website is available in several languages)
