Terfens – St. Georgenberg – Strass im Zillertal
We continue our hike on the left side of the Inn river, reach Vomperberg near Vomp, and arrive directly at the Benedictine Abbey of Fiecht.
We are now approaching several highlights on the Austrian Jerusalem Way!
After the abbey, the path leads us left up the hillside, and in Weng, on our left, we pass a Jerusalem Cross by the wayside! For us, this is a wonderful sign, reminding us that we are on our way to the greatest pilgrimage destination in Christendom: Jerusalem! A place to pause, reflect on what we have experienced so far, give thanks, and pray. Step by step, we continue uphill until we finally reach St. Georgenberg via a remarkable wooden bridge. This is the oldest pilgrimage site in Tyrol and one of the oldest and highest pilgrimage sites in Austria! This secluded place, an old hermitage, is wonderful. Once at the top, body and soul are well cared for: a monastery & inn await the pilgrim. Strengthened, the path leads us down through the impressive Wolfsklamm gorge into the valley to Stans.
The Wolfsklamm is a natural monument. Connoisseurs describe the Wolfsklamm as the most beautiful gorge in the Alps!
Alternative: In case of bad weather, you can also continue in the valley from Fiecht Abbey, thus reaching Stans directly without St. Georgenberg and Wolfsklamm. This shortens the route by about 4.5 km.
Once in Stans, the Jerusalem Way leads us further to the impressive Tratzberg Castle! Afterwards, we descend and reach the Achensee power plant, which is fed by the Achensee (the largest lake in Tyrol!) located further north in the mountains. We reach Jenbach, where we now cross to the right side of the Inn river, and subsequently reach Maria Brettfall. At the end of the day, the picturesque stage town of Strass im Zillertal awaits us. Strass is located just before the Ziller river flows into the Inn.
This stage has a total elevation gain of about 1,000 meters. If necessary, you can also stay overnight in Jenbach, for example. Regardless, the many sights on this stage, in just one day, are hard to beat. We will certainly remember them for a long time.
