On our way through Austria heading east, the Arlberg is the highest pass, and Sankt Christoph, located there, is therefore also the highest stage town. This is our last stage in Vorarlberg, because from tomorrow we will be hiking in Tyrol. It is also the last stage in the Rhine catchment area, a catchment area we entered some time ago at Lake Geneva above Lausanne. From tomorrow, we will be in the catchment area of the Inn and Danube, which the JERUSALEM WAY will then follow into the Balkans. The path in the valley up to the Arlberg Pass is a historic and important traffic artery; however, tunnels were dug for both the railway and the motorway to relieve traffic and ensure winter safety. Thanks to these investments, the pass has remained reasonable for “slow traffic.” At the beginning, our path leads us uphill several times on decommissioned railway tracks on the sunny side of the valley, and in the upper part, we often follow the “Altelz” stream in the valley floor, which we have also come to know well by now.
