Description

The mountain cantons in alpine Central Switzerland are relatively small, so it is not surprising that on today's stage shortly before Sankt Jakob we leave the canton of Obwalden again and come to the canton of Nidwalden. Here in Catholic Central Switzerland it is also noticeable that we are hiking on a historical pilgrimage route, as we pass countless wayside shrines, crossroads, chapels and churches. On the other hand, we leave the larger towns of Sarnen, Kerns and Alpnach in the valley floor on the left on the pilgrim path over the promising heights. When leaving Flüeli, we first descend steeply to the deeply cut Melchaa, for which a road or stairs are available. We have drawn the way across the street on the map, the stairs begin at the southern exit of Flüeli. After crossing the Melchaa, we climb back up on the other side of the valley to Sankt Niklausen, from where we have a beautiful view of Obwalden. After St. Niklausen we pass the Bethanienheim (Dominican convent). A trip to the modern chapel is almost a must. At Egg, the view opens towards Nidwalden and Sarnen. At Sankt Antoni we reach the bottom of the valley for the first time. We then leave this again behind Sankt Jakob and shortly afterwards see the striking Rohrenchappeli down on the main road. At the foot of the Stanserhorn we gain height again, enjoy the view of Stans, Stanserhorn, Pilatus, the Rigi and the Schwyzerberge and then finally descend to the canton capital Stans, where the Winkelried memorial on the village square reminds us of the battle of Sempach - another piece of Swiss history.
