Description
Today's stage in central Switzerland through the original canton of Uri is characterized by impressive views of the Schwyz basin and the Swiss Alps, but also by a continuous ascent of around 1 meters in altitude to the Haggenegg transition near the two Mythen. This crossing lies at 000 meters above sea level and is the highest point of the pilgrimage routes in Switzerland, if we exclude the Alpine Way of St. James in Graubünden, which connects South Tyrol to Central Switzerland, and also the Via Francigena that crosses the Great St. Bernhard leaves Switzerland for Italy. When we leave Brunnen and Lake Lucerne, we soon pass the Ingenbohl monastery and shortly afterwards we cross the wild Alpine river Muota near Ibach, which flows very well here in the basin. Shortly afterwards we reach the canton capital Schwyz with the picturesque town center. We leave the valley floor past the Kollegium Schwyz and begin the aforementioned, sweaty ascent to Haggenegg past the hamlet of Ried. We mostly hike in forests, but still have the opportunity to enjoy the panorama behind us. When we arrived at the Haggenegg mountain restaurant with an impressive view of the Haggenspitz opposite, we really deserved a rest. The following descent to Alpthal am Bach «Alp» is comparatively easy again. From Alpthal we hike in the valley floor of the «Alp» past the Benedictine monastery Au to the stage location Einsiedeln with its famous monastery.
